A relaxing, low-maintenance garden design near Newark, Nottinghamshire

“We have a boring, underused and rather dysfunctional garden…if you enjoy a challenge this one might be for you.”

Time for a change? Let's call our local garden designer

It is always exciting for a garden designer near Newark when a new enquiry lands in your inbox, but when it starts with the message above it immediately whets the appetite. Our customers for this garden design project live in a large property in a popular village on the Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire border. Both busy professionals, they had very limited time to spend in the garden and tended to prefer to enjoy their limited leisure hours on the golf course.

Mainly laid to lawn and dominated by an overgrown conifer hedge on one boundary, the existing garden was flat, tired and uninspiring. The very limited areas of paving (a legacy of a recent extension to the property) were uninviting and too small to be practical. The time was right for a change, and Tythorne Garden Design was asked to completely redesign the whole garden to make it more useable, more interesting and as low-maintenance as possible.

A well-designed seating and entertaining area

Our starting point for the garden design was to create a large ‘destination’ seating and entertaining space. Generously proportioned, and constructed from low-maintenance composite decking at the customer’s request, this seating area is visible from all parts of the garden. It can also be seen and enjoyed from all of the key windows and doors at the rear of the property.

Slightly raised, its visibility serves as a constant reminder that there is a reason to go outside and enjoy spending some time in the garden. Attractive trellis screening wraps around the decked area, providing a perfect framework for clematis and fragrant climbing roses.

A sculptural and low-maintenance water feature for sound and visual interest

In front of the seating and entertaining area, a beautiful sculptural dark grey water feature is centrally positioned on a large square of contrasting crisp white pebbles. This is a very deliberately calm and restful composition, designed to provide a relaxing view at the end of a long working day.

Having struggled to maintain the lawn in their previous garden, our customers were absolutely certain that they wanted an artificial lawn in their new garden. A large square of the finest quality Luxigraze artificial grass from our friends at Talasey Group provides a luxurious feel to the new garden whilst requiring practically no maintenance. Perfect.

Who says you can't play golf in a small garden?

A second, slightly smaller, square of lawn is of particular interest to our ‘keen golfer’ customers. Featuring an extra fine grade of artificial grass, this lawn doubles up as a delightful small putting green. Complete with three holes, this is the perfect spot for a few minutes practice to ease away the stresses of a long week.

Complementary, low-maintenance paving provides all-weather access to all of the key areas of the garden. Constructed from beautiful Italian porcelain, supplied again by Talasey Group, it features clean lines and a purposely simple laying pattern.

Low-maintenance planting design for year-round colour and interest

To complete the new garden, Tythorne Garden Design provided a wonderfully low-maintenance planting design. With a careful balance of shrubs and perennials, this planting scheme is easy to look after and provides year-round colour and interest for our customers. Designed to look just as good when viewed from inside the house, the planting is quickly become settled and established.

Simple LED garden lighting design to make the most of the new garden

A simple lighting design complements the strong lines and shapes of the new garden design. Stainless steel tier lights provide attractive illumination for the planting areas, whilst recessed spotlights create a lovely textured effect on the spherical water feature. Finally, a series of discreet spike lights create a gentle and atmospheric warm-white wash of light against the trellis screen surrounding the seating and entertaining area.

Utilising low-voltage Hunza LED lights throughout, the lighting design can be easily controlled by a clever remote-control system. This enables our customer to select different lighting zones at different times and to create different moods depending upon how the garden is being used. Great for evening entertaining or for enjoying a cheeky late-night alfresco G&T.

A garden designed for relaxing and pleasure

This was a wonderful project for Tythorne Garden Design. It is always a thrill to be asked to design a garden near Newark, particularly when it give us an opportunity to transform a ‘blank canvas’ into a much-loved and appreciated garden. The brief for this design was simple- create a calm and relaxing garden that helps our customers to enjoy being outside again. We’d say we achieved that, and our lovely customers are clearly absolutely delighted with the end results:

“Thank you for making our garden a living space and a work of art. We continue to be over the moon with your work. Even in the drizzle the garden is the best room in the house, completely devoid of clutter...unlike the rooms!”
