Ophiopogon ‘Nigrescens’: an usually dark and compact plant
Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ is a striking low-growing perennial grass with wonderfully dark green to black foliage. Compact and clump-forming, it provides wonderful colour contrast alongside a host of different plants.
Growing to heights of 10-20cm, O. ‘Nigrescens’ tolerates dappled shade but provides better foliage colour if it can enjoy more prolonged exposure to full sun. It can usually cope with most soil types, but is happiest in well-drained ground. Tiny, rather insignificant purple white flowers appear in mid summer, often followed by small black berries.
O. ‘Nigrescens’ is perfect as an edging for a well-used path, or in large containers with alongside a focal-point plant. Because of its diminutive size, it is best-planted in groups or drifts for maximum impact, but individual plants will slowly spread if given time.
