Polystichum setiferum: an attractive large evergreen fern
Polystichum setiferum is an attractive and versatile fern. Achieving heights of 100-125cm, and widths of 50-90cm, P. setiferum is a large fern with elegant arching soft green fronds.
It can tolerate some direct sunshine, but prefers partial or full shade. It will grow in most soil types as long as there is some residual moisture. Fresh foliage appears as tightly wrapped curls before gently unfurling to form new leaves. Older growth can be cut back in the winter if desired.
Perfect for a shaded border or corner of a garden, P. setiferum looks fantastic when planted in naturalistic clumps or drifts. It also looks well alongside other shade-tolerant plants such as Hostas, Pachysandra and Hakonechloa.
