A 'fresh start' garden design near Grantham, Lincolnshire

Ever felt like a fresh start? A desire to 'start again' is one of the most popular reasons for garden design customers to get in touch with Tythorne Garden Design and request our help. And that is just what happened with this delightful customer and her good-sized plot in an popular village near Grantham in Lincolnshire.

Sometimes, one of the most important tasks for a garden designer is to offer a ‘clean pair of eyes’

Predominantly laid to lawn with generous planting beds and a few mature trees, the existing garden was beginning to feel rather tired. Our customer wanted to start again but, as so often happens, she really didn’t know where to begin. Sometimes, one of the most important tasks for a garden designer is to offer a ‘clean pair of eyes’, to see the garden differently and to suggest a completely new solution.

In situations like this, it is important to focus on the requirements for the new garden. We often describe it as ‘a wish list’, and for this project the wish list was pretty clear: a new seating and entertaining area, a couple of additional smaller seating areas dotted around the garden, a generously-sized lawn, low-maintenance planting borders and attractive views from the kitchen and living room. Oh, and ideally it needed to include curves rather than too many straight lines. OK, that definitely gave us something to work with.

A garden design with circles and curves

Our design solution for this garden was to create a large circular lawn and a surrounding lawn path with clipped box hedging. A series of oak arches offer an important element of height and structure, and provide the perfect support for a series of deliciously fragrant climbing roses. A centrally positioned, spherical water feature serves as a lovely focal point, as does the attractive arbour at the end of the garden.

A new, generously-proportioned area of paving by the house features a sunken hot tub and provides plenty of room for seating and entertaining. Two curved steps lead us gently down to the lawn. A nearby smaller area of paving creates an additional seating area and offers the perfect location for a G&T in the evening sunshine.

Low-maintenance hard landscaping materials

As ever, the hard-landscaping materials selected for this project had to complement the property and its location. Paving is constructed from a buff-coloured porcelain and is attractive, durable and extremely low-maintenance. A textured landscaping brick provides a colour contrast and has been used as an edging, a detail and for the steps. The bespoke arches are made of oak will weather beautifully over time and will require no long-term maintenance.

Beautiful and practical planting

In keeping with the request from our customer, the planting design for this garden is both easy on the eye and easy to maintain. Carefully selected shrubs provide height, texture and volume whilst a variety of perennials offer seasonal colour and interest. The clipped box (Buxus sempervirens) hedging will take a little time to establish but is already providing a strong structural statement with minimal attention- giving it a light clipping once or twice a year should keep it in check and looking good.
