Rosmarinus ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’: a wonderfully aromatic evergreen shrub

Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ is an excellent form of Rosemary with an upright growth-habit and beautifully aromatic evergreen foliage. Providing texture, fragrance and interest throughout the year, this is an excellent and versatile garden plant. R. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ is also good for keen cooks, with the leaves adding flavour to a wide range of culinary dishes.

Achieving heights of up to 1.5m, R. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ has dark green needle-like leaves in clusters along strong woody stems. Attractive and abundant small blue/purple flowers appear from mid-spring to early summer, and are very popular with bees and many other pollinators.

Mediterranean in origin, Rosemary prefers free draining soils and plenty of sun. We think it is best positioned near to a path or seating area where the fragrance can be fully enjoyed, but it is also happy against a wall or in a large container. For convenience, it also makes sense to keep it within easy reach of the kitchen, either as part of a dedicated herb garden or within a mixed planting border.

R. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’s’ fine foliage and upright growth-habit make it an excellent plant for providing structure and textural contrast. It looks great alongside ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’ or Stipa gigantea. Similarly, large shrubs including Cornus ‘Sibirica’ or Cotinus ‘Royal Purple’ make attractive companions, as do perennials like Verbena bonariensis, Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ or Salvia 'Caradonna'.
